älvsborgsbron

we had a few minutes of sun yesterday so we walked across the älvsborg bridge

BIKES NOT CARS

monday

the sun this morning in our (somewhat messy) kitchen.

surprisingly (and sadly) some of the best croissants we have had in göteborg come from 7-eleven
(yes they have them here - EVERYWHERE)

-

also - last night, after all my years in the kitchen, i finally had my very first complete and total disaster. every single component of dinner turned out inedible - beef, onions, mashed potatoes (and really how do you screw up mashed potatoes??!?) - and made the apartment smell awful. the whole weekend had been pretty poor: we went out to the suburbs to a dreadful mall to look for a bank which turned out to be closed, it was gloomy drizzly weather most of saturday, i stepped in a huge dog poop while walking in the woods, manchester united got destroyed, and then i destroyed what was to have been our nice sunday supper...

so we went out for kebabs and a movie (which i quite liked - although, had you been sitting next to me, you might not have guessed since i cried through most of the last half hour). in the end then it turned out alright :)

sunday

it has been mostly cloudy and grey here lately, so today we were happy to finally see the sun again

this is the view from the top of...

a really huge slide!

and here is a cute red house we saw in the woods:

Trädgårdsföreningen

i love all conservatories, and this one is right downtown - and free!
i'll be going there throughout the winter for a dose of tropical cheer.

da matteo

after a few weeks of trial and error, we have finally found a place that serves delicious cappuccinos and perfect buttery croissants! da matteo is a nice cafe located in a sweet little passage just off one of the main shopping streets. they also run a roastery and bakery a few blocks away. it's all the way down town, unfortunately, but fortunately our closest tram line goes right to it! so you can find us there every weekend morning :)

djurparken // slottsskogen zoo

there is a zoo in the middle of slottsskogen, way up on a hill. it feels a little like narnia when you climb up to it...

because suddenly it opens up before you, and it is huge! when you walk around the paths below you never could guess all of that is up there. this just adds to the magical excitement of the place. also, it is FREE. (!!!!!!!!)

this zoo is filled with nordic animals, not exotic species (well except the penguins i guess?)
here you can see all the different animals there (the text only in swedish but there are cute pictures!)

can you find the two elk here?

they seemed to thoroughly enjoy chewing on a bundle of ... branches? yummy.

at first we thought they were pretty strange looking, almost prehistoric - and they were HUGE!
but when you spend some time looking at them you can start to appreciate their sweetness;
this little one had the nicest eyes, the camera does not do him justice!

papa elk was enjoying some alone-time

deer!! who would have thought i would be excited to see some deer in a zoo?
but they were very soft-looking, and i wanted to pet them.
they are a different kind of deer than what we have back in california - smaller and cuter.
there were so many of them...

can you find the peacock?

they did not seem to mind him hanging about

geese! we pass them when we go running, and they are always huddled together, sleeping.

humboldt penguins!

and from the zoo hill, there are wonderful views

and nice benches to enjoy them from.

often you cannot even see any buildings, and it feels just like being out in the countryside...

frost

we have been waking up to frost!
the grass is covered in sparkling white when we go out for our morning runs
although it melts away quickly in the brilliant sun we have been having
