vargö

today, although i woke up feeling more sick than yesterday, i decided the fresh sea air would be good for me, so we went to visit göteborg's southern archipelago. the trip out is almost the best part of it. we took a tram to saltholmen at the coast, and from there got on the first ferry. the ferries are part of the public transportation system, you just use your tram ticket to get on! we bought sandwiches from the onboard cafe and picked cozy seats on the second floor. the trip lasts about an hour, with stops at other islands in the archipelago along the way. it is gorgeous out there, even on a grey day.

we ended up at an island called vargö

most of it is a nature preserve

we took a path over the island through the forest

there were many nice things in the woods

like birdhouses

a kind-of-creepy-in-a-nice-way black pond

mirabelles

mushrooms

pretty sticks

shiny rose hips and bright red berries

and these, which we thought were blueberries

but turned out to be slånbär - much too tart to eat raw

they were such pretty woods

at the end of the path, we reached the beach!

in the summer it is a good place for swimming

i found a crab shell

and a spot where it seemed jellyfish came to die
they were strange and interesting, being pushed forward and back by the tide

when we got back to the dock, we realized the next ferry would not come for two hours!

so we waited...

it was cold

but it wasn't all bad...

but we really were very glad to finally get on the ferry home.

we treated ourselves to coffee and a miniature version of my favourite swedish sweet: tosca cake
