bohuslän

we just got back from a short trip to bohuslän, the province just up the coast north of göteborg.
it was grey and stormy weather the whole time, and the winds were incredible.

but it was lovely anyway, so good to get away from the city for a bit.
this is the little seaside town of fjällbacka, a little summer tourist town, mostly deserted now in the winter:

christmas!

thank you all so much for your lovely gifts and holiday wishes!

christmas walk

toscatårta // tosca cake

since we moved into this apartment, our oven has been broken.
we finally got it fixed, and today i baked toscatårta, my favourite swedish cake, to celebrate.
it is a delicious moist and buttery cake topped with a layer of crunchy almond caramel, and i love it ♥
i also love having a working oven again!

wednesday

four days before christmas, and still no snow.
i think this might be as good as it's going to get for us this year ;)

tulips, and good news

red tulips are part of traditional swedish christmas decorations, but i am not sure why. they are sold everywhere right now, along with wreaths and christmas trees, and we bought a big bouquet of them.

also: today i got an early christmas present from the swedish migration board:
my residence permit, valid until 2016!!

it feels wonderful to finally be properly legally registered for the first time in 1.5 years :)

and there's snow on the forecast for tomorrow!

crunch crunch crunch...

crushing frozen puddles -
one of my favourite things to do on icy mornings.
i love those crunching sounds so much!

thursday

today i climbed the tall rocks on the coast so that i could look out at the sea.
it was clear, beautiful, and absolutely freezing up there.

sort of...

last night, after a long wait, we finally got our first snow!
it was a bit wet, and it did not last very long, but this morning we woke up and it was still on the ground.
even if it does not last through the day, i am glad to see a bit of white out there -
and i am sure that pretty soon there will be a lot more of it :)

pancakes!

this morning we woke up late for the first time in a very long while - because with this kind of weather, why bother waking up at all! it is storming outside with fierce wind whipping the rain against the window, and making a terrible shrieking noise through some hidden gap in the window.

no use in fighting it or complaining - it is best to fetch another cup of good hot coffee, and make yogurt and sour cream pancakes! they turned out really lovely, were incredibly easy to get together, and even though we did not have any maple syrup they tasted delicious topped with butter and powdered sugar or jam. so i thought i would share the recipe, in case any of you are having similar days that call for a similar remedy ;)

7 tablespoons flour
1 tablespoon powdered sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup turkish (or greek) yogurt
1/2 cup light sour cream
2 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

combine the dry ingredients in a medium bowl, then add the yogurt and sour cream and stir it in gently, just until the mixture is moistened. in a separate bowl, beat together eggs and vanilla, then add to the rest and mix until just combined - don't overmix!

cook in a buttered skillet, waiting for small bubbles to appear before turning - about 2 minutes per side. eat with butter, a little powdered sugar, jam, fresh fruit, sour cream, maple syrup - or anything else you like!
